Drug Uses
Clarinex is an antihistamine, Clarinex is used to treat the symptoms of allergies, such as sneezing, hives, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Allergies affect an estimated 50 million Americans. Symptoms can occur seasonally because of airborne pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds, or year-round as a result of dust mites, pet dander, cockroaches or mold.
Clarinex works by blocking the action of histamine released by the immune system, thus relieving some of the important allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, hives, watery eyes, and runny nose. When you are exposed to an allergen a specific type of white blood cell called the mast cell releases histamine. Histamine attaches to its site of action called receptors on nearby blood vessels, causing them to dilate or enlarge, leading to redness, swelling, itching, and changes in the secretions.
Clarinex block the histamine receptors, preventing these membrane changes and the resulting symptoms and Clarinex also block histamine from stimulating nerve endings, which can cause itching and other symptoms. Clarinex (desloratadine) is a long-acting tricyclic histamine antagonist with selective H1-receptor histamine antagonist activity. Desloratadine inhibited histamine release from human mast cells in vitro.
Clarinex does not cause drowsiness.
